Maybe this issue feels disturbing. But actually, when we looked at death, when we faced this old skeleton – fear faded away. Accepting that death is part of the circle of life, the consequence and condition of birth, gives peace.

Winter came, nature stopped her movements. For three, four month, there was no flow of energy. It became still. We became still. The air became thin and grey. There was no life anymore, no growth, no nourishment. There was Death. With icy air it was breathing at us. And although for many people there was depression, we seek our motivation, our inspiration in this void. It seems to us that in our modern society we try to completely exclude Death. We function at the illusion of eternal Youth. We pretend Death doesn’t exist and somehow ageing means getting excluded from social life. Therefore we do plastic surgery to look younger than we are. When Death comes into our life, we turn away. We avoid looking at it. We pretend it isn’t there. Corona brought Death back to the consciousness of our society. And even whilst part of the official politics seem to still operate from a place of trying to control the virus, it seems obvious that we have to surrender in some helplessness. Most of the nations didn’t manage to control the virus. People are dying. And with the shutdown of most of the public and social activities, aliveness fades away…
In Kinbaku however – how we see it – the topic of Death is very present. In Kabuki theater, in early Ukiyo-e pictures: Death is very present. The princess bound in the snow is left there to die, in slow agony… There is no “happy end”. Miho – the Muse of Norio Sugiura-san -, when being tied for the shoot, is dreaming to die, refusing to betray her lover… We dedicated the research for this issue to the topic of death and dying. Again we brought in people from within the scene and from outside to give us their perspective. Maybe this issue feels disturbing. But actually, when we looked at death, when we faced this old skeleton – fear faded away. Accepting that death is part of the circle of life, the consequence and condition of birth, gives peace. And out of this peaceful mood grows aliveness. To accept death means celebrating life! Witnessing the transitional element of all life allows us to focus on the joy to be alive. Winter is gone now. In Berlin it is already exceptionally warm. People sit outside, ignoring the pandemic, gathering up – because that is what we human beings do: being social in real life, in all our flesh and skin and bones. Also our magazine grows – thanks to your interest and support. The volume of this edition is raised to 250 pieces. We are already thinking ahead to our research in Spring, for the next issue. It will focus on the phallus, the penis, the dick – on male bodies tied, on fertility and the orgastic cults of celebrating the outbursting, abundant nature of this coming season. But for now, indulge a little bit more into the dark, dimmed, silent mood of this magazine. Feel the subtle current of erotisism that is tuned into it. Flip through the pages, enjoy the writings, the poetry and the visuals. We hope you find some beautiful feelings and peaceful joy in it. Alexander MA
